Quick thought, what if brand conscious people just bought the key fob shells of high end manufacturers and kept the vehicle they have or bought something reasonable? You get to have a smarter financial situation while being able to strut about in the breakroom. Plus, if anyone asks, just say it’s at home, or only for special occasions, perhaps in storage, or maybe even an appreciating future classic. All of a sudden Paul and Christie seem like badass Maserati owners that choose to drive their Previa everywhere because they are succeeding harder than everyone else!
“Oops, it seems I dropped my keys over by your desk! Would you mind handing me those?”
“You own a Lamborghini?”
“Nooo, just the keys to one! Haha!!” (Not lying)
Just saying, if you’re going to a key party...lifehacker level stuff here!

It sure is, but wouldn’t buying an entire car for the badge be worse? We do it with shoes, phones, lawnmowers, sunglasses...no one is quite as deep as they think they are.

Nah, this is worse.
You can walk around flashing your key fob to strangers and they wouldn’t have a chance to ask if you own a vehicle.
At least if you buy the car for the badge, you have the car and the key fob, haha.

The car is all people care about. And normal people don’t just carry keys to cars they aren’t driving at that time, so you would get called on it very quick.

Yeah, I have 3 on my carabiner, but I’ll usually cut it down to 2 or even one, if there isn’t a chance I’m driving the cars. The two mainstays are typically my BMW and Porsche keys, though, but 90s BMW keys and 70s Porsche keys looked very unimpressive (the Porsche 924 key is literally a VW key stamped with the crest).

I did too! There is another joke similar to this one that I remember but can’t find right now. In my memory, the bullies with bart put a Hyundai badge on Principle Skinners Honda and he bemoans that people will think he drives a Hon-Day instead of a Hon-Dah! I need to find it...

It looks very tacky when you get caught. Most people wouldn’t care if you don’t have a Maserati. But if they know you care enough to carry a fake fob, it gives an impression that you’re a shallow and cheap poser.
If you’re meeting people you know, they’d catch on pretty quick.
